Junior Olympics 2023 Payment Plan FAQ

  • What is it?
    • Junior Olympics (JO’s) is the National Championship for our sport.  It is a tournament that draws teams from all over the country and rotates location between NorCal and Orange County each year.  The 2023 tournament will be in Orange County.  To play in JO’s, we first must qualify (JO Quals) in a regional tournament.  Participation in JO Quals is a committment to participate in JO's if chosen.  We compete in the Central California Zone.  Based on prior year costs, we estimate the total cost of JO’s and JO Quals to be approximately $550 per athlete.
  • When / Where are the Tournaments?
    • JO Quals – June 16-18 – Merced Area
    • JO’s – July 20-23 – Orange County
  • How did you set the estimate?
    • There are several expenses that go into this, generally we used last years’ expenses.  Example, the entry fee for JO’s was $1000, so we used that for estimating purposes
  • Why so much?
    • You are paying for about 7 days of water polo competition.  JO Quals is 2-3 days and JO’s is 4 days.  These are overnight, non-local tournaments.
  • What is included in the Fees?
    • Tournament fees for 2 tournaments and team shirt.  Does NOT cover transportation/lodging/food for athletes.
  • How does the payment plan work?
    • You register, and we bill your card $75 at the end of the month for six months starting in February (2/1, 3/1, 4/1, 5/1, 6/1, 7/1).  If you register after the plan has started, you will be billed to bring you up to date with past “missed” deposits.
      • Example A – you register on 3/13, you would be billed Jan + Feb + Mar ($225) on 3/31, then $75 on 4/30 and $75 on 5/31.
      • Example B – you register for the event on 5/7, you would be billed $375 on 5/31.
  • What if the final cost is more / less than the estimate?
    • There will be a reconciliation due at the close of the tournament.  If you make 6 payments ($425) and JO’s + Quals cost $565, then you would be billed $565 - $425 = $140 after JO’s
  • What if we don’t qualify?
    • Now that USAWP has expanded the tournament with Silver / Bronze and the Invitational Division, virtually every team qualifies that enters.  However, in the rare event that we don’t qualify, you would receive a refund of your deposits less the amount due for the expense of JO Quals.
  • What is the cut-off date / entry deadline?
    • We need to know your interest in playing by Mid-May (2023 TBD pending entry deadline).
  • How do I express interest in playing for Bulldog WPC at JO’s and JO Quals?
  • If I pay, am I guaranteed a spot on a team?
    • No, but we will do our best to find you a place to play.  Example, if we have 5 goalies for our 16u A and B team.  We only need 4 goalies between 2 teams – we would work with the 5th goalie and communicate her prospects in advance so she could find another team to play for.
  • What if I leave the team?
    • We enter teams into JO’s and prepay the entry fee based on signups.  If you enter the payment plan and then leave the club after the entry deadline (Friday, 5/22), we will have entered the tournaments and paid money assuming your participation; as such - you forfeit all monies paid.
    • If you are not selected for a team - refund of balance
  • Can I pick which team I play on?
    • No, the coaches pick who makes the A and B teams or who plays up (ex: 16-year-old playing in 18u).  Dis-satisfaction with team placement is not a valid reason for a refund.
  • Can I skip Quals and just play in JO’s?
    • We need to qualify for the best seed at JO’s, so we need a full team for Quals.  If you do not play in Quals, we will not bump someone from the team to make room for you.  The only way you could make the team is if we were short and needed another player.
  • I have camp/church outing/summer trip planned and can’t play in Quals, but I still want to play in JO’s, can I make the team?
    • This must be communicated well in advance and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
  • If I play Quals and don’t play in JO’s, can I get a partial refund?
    • Club affiliation deadlines prevent players from switching clubs starting approximately June 1st.  As such, you can’t play for one club at Quals and then play for a different club at JO’s.
  • If I play on the B team at Quals, can I be moved up to the A team for JO’s?
    • No, the rosters are locked down.  The only exception to this would be in the unlikely case of the B team not qualifying, then those players on the B team would be eligible to move up.
  • If I'm unhappy with how we finish at JO Qual's, can I go play for another club and be on their JO team?
    • No - club affiliations are locked down approximately June 1st (before Quals) and thereby prevent this.
  • What is the Allocation process / How many teams qualify for JO’s?
